I have never been great at shooting wide (geez that’s a great way to start a review) But honestly, it doesn’t come naturally to me. I am great up close with a telephoto lens and this is easy to see from my work. I habitually return to my proclivity and it is hurting my progress. So, this is me fighting back, this is my cure. Enter the Batis 18mm.
Oh my gosh, this lens is stellar! This was up against the Sony 16-35 f4 which is another great lens which I have used but ultimately, I love to shoot primes. ‘Just bloody move’ as my friend John would say. I am happy to report that this was a great choice with the Zeiss 18mm f2.8
A couple of notes.
- Image quality is superb, colour and bokeh (out of focus areas) is smooth and creamy.
- Focuses extremely fast with modelling lamp turned on.
- Distortion, well field curvature has to be thought about, it is stupid wide.
Shooting it at a BBQ:
So here you can see how wide this thing is, its crazy. These shots the photographer is standing pretty close, kinda hard to describe how wide this thing is. But its super sharp, crazy nice colour but is a little hefty / sizeable. But as I’ve heard in a review before, I think I’m in love.
Keep Shooting beautiful people!
Yours creatively always,

A Little About Me. #bio #nerd #aspiration
My name is Eli Samuel, my passion is to empower artists to bring a little bit more beauty into the world one image at a time. I am a little nerdy, a little crass and an endless chatterbox. Blogging is my way of giving back. I read the posts published by the photographic heroes regularly like Steve Huff, Ken Rockwell etc. I thought to myself, stop being selfish! My dream is to grace the cover of Vogue Italia. I am coming for you Vogue! Help me get there.
